The Vancouver Olympic games are coming up February 12 -28, what will you be doing? Below are some tips on having a sustainable trip!

Do what you can to help make the Games sustainable.

Here are some key strategies for you to consider when you attend the 2010 Winter Games to help us meet our sustainability objectives:

  • Choose an alternate mode of transportation to get around, whether you’re attending Games events or moving about the region. Lots of options – including expanded public transit, pedestrian and cycling routes and rideshare/carpool programs – are available. Learn more about transportation options for the Games.
  • Practice the three R’s (Reduce, Reuse, and Recycle) using the bins provided at all Games venues.
  • Take only what you need. In order to reduce your need for paper guides as much as possible, Vancouver2010.com will feature all the information you need to enjoy the 2010 Winter Games experience.
  • Use travel mugs (reusable mugs) instead of disposable cups wherever possible. You can find many varieties at the Olympic Store! Visit http://www.vancouver2010.com/store.

It’s a small world after all — and small is the new large!!

Sunday, January 10th, 2010

It’s refreshing to finally see companies starting to understand that we don’t need bigger badder products. Today we need things to be simple and small that can fit into our lives and our pocket books!! Homes, appliances, computers, cell phones, and cars…on man, no one really needs that extended monster truck with the 7 foot tires do they? Along with some other forward thinking companies Ford Motor Company has figured out what we are looking for!

Tomorrow at the Detriot Auto Show welcome the new Ford Focus!

The once lost fish has now been found! Hear its brave story!

Sunday, December 27th, 2009

For weeks now the Cyan has been mourning the loss of one of our two clown fish twins. Its disappearance and lack of physical evidence (no floating fish body) was somewhat of a mystery to all of our residents; “one moment it was swimming around having a great time and the next….gone” exclaimed one distraught residents. Even after putting our best detective skills to work we came up empty handed. For all our efforts we could not solve the mystery of the disappearing clown fish twin.

clownfish

Over the next few weeks we continued to search for any signs of our lost friend with no luck. Our other clown fish wouldn’t give up the search and seemed heart broken, never leaving the top of the tank. With the loss of its twin clown fish it looked like we would lose our other clown fish too.  After we had given up all hope on ever knowing what had happened to our fishy friend its twin gave us a sign! While cleaning out the 85 gallon tank our other clown fish would not move from the filter area and time and time again tried to swim up the filter hose. That’s when we saw it! A flipper slap the top of the water in the over flow filter! After some wrangling around the filter tank we found our clown fish was safe and sound!! For two weeks our little friend had kept itself alive swimming around in the over flow tank after being sucked up into the filter system.

 reunited!

Today our clown fish twins are reunited and happily swimming around the Cyan tank with all of their other fishy friends! If you are interested in meeting this heroic little swimmer stop by the Cyan leasing office and we will introduce you.

Rosa Parks Transit Center in Detroit, MI!

Wednesday, December 16th, 2009

Ok, it’s not in Portland and it’s not even in Oregon… but I know there are some fellow Michiganders out there who would love to see this! If it has been a while since your last visit to Michigan, check out the images below of the transit center in Detroit that was completed in July 2009.

RosaParksTransitCenter

“The new Rosa Parks Transit Center includes a passenger terminal and roof canopy covering a drop off and outdoor waiting area which will play a pivotal role in providing alternate means of public transportation to the greater Detroit area. The project brief was simple: a permanent roof structure, to withstand harsh weathers, durable, easy to maintain, inexpensive and unique.rosaparkstransit

The architect, Parson Brinkerhoff, MI, a pioneer in transportation facilities, invited FTL Design and Engineering Studio to be part of their team to develop an ‘elegant and contemporary canopy.’

4_small-125x125FTL developed a design approach that uses flowing canopies to create an active visual space and naturally day light space which challenges the conventional notion of roof where the membrane both hovers 50 ft in space, and in other areas brought to ground and to act as a giant water collector. To create rhythm, the proposed scheme was broken down into seven repetitive bays, each approximately 110′ long and 50 ft wide. Each bay is comprised of two trusses, an A frame and fabric which is pulled down, transforming the roof into a wall and encompassing a courtyard.”

Thinking about downsizing your life? See what this couple is doing!

Saturday, December 12th, 2009

If you think downsizing to a luxury Cyan apartment might be too challenging…see what this NYC couple has done to live their lives to the fullest!

175-square-foot studio just enough for couple, 2 cats

Their cozy, $150,000 apartment leaves them plenty of room — and money — for comforts outside the home.

There’s a lotta love in New York’s tiniest apartment. Not that Zaarath and Christopher Prokop have much of a choice, nestled in their 175-square-foot “microstudio” with their two cats.

But The New York Postwrites that for the Prokops, who bought the apartment three months ago for $150,000, it was a choice.

Small, simple designed condos are growing more popular in many metropolitan areas

Their first apartment, in New Jersey, was 1,600 square feet, and with downsizing already on the brain they moved into a 900-square-foot apartment in Jersey City. When Manhattan became their next destination, they decided they could go even smaller.

paper-waste_small

Did you know . . . .Every year, Americans throw away enough office and writing paper to build a wall 12 feet high, stretching from Los Angeles to New York City.

This photo shows 29.4% of garbage is paper, but this figure is increasing and now 34.2% of all garbage is paper. Paper usage is rising by around 20% every year, with the average office worker using approximately 50 sheets of paper every day in the typical office. More than 100 million trees are destroyed each year to produce junk mail and American consumers receive 41 pounds of junk mail each year.
