Where Can You Find the World’s Best Street Food? You Guess It…

Portland, Oregon.

Being from Portland, it’s easy to understand how this honor was bestowed upon this city.  Knowing the variety and quality of the food carts the city has to offer you can easily think there is no competition.

Los Angeles and New York might put up a fight, which is understandable as they are fairly large cities(Ha).

But Portland was not just name the top street food city in the United States, but in the entire world.

Think about all the major cities throughout the world who offer amazing street food via markets, baazars or simply through the stands they have on the streets.  Portland reigned supreme in this battle because of the food cart culture that we endear so much.

The rankings are courtesy of CNN who ranked Portland ahead of major international cities such as Rio de Janeiro and Vienna.  To check out the full rankings read the CNN article, “World’s Best Street Food.”

Kenny and Zuke’s

Looking for a delicious and hearty meal? Look no farther than to Kenny and Zuke’s. This Jewish styled deli serves up some of the best sandwiches Portland has to offer.

The Kenny and Zuke’s menu is virtually endless.  With a ton of items to offer both breakfast and lunch themed you will be sure to find something you will love.

I had the veggie Reuben while I was there.  Grilled zucchini, mushrooms and onions replaced the meat while everything else stayed the same.  The Russian dressing, sauerkraut, rye bread and the Swiss cheese all combined perfectly with the grilled veggies to make one amazing sandwich.

Despite this sandwich being absolutely amazing, I cannot say it was my favorite food I enjoyed while there.  The potato salad is out of this world.  I really cannot comment on how much I enjoyed this salad.  Some potato salads are over cooked potato mush with mayo and mustard with some other stuff thrown in.  Not this salad.  Perfectly cooked potatoes, a wonderful dressing, chives to accent the salad.  Simple, but absolutely delicious.

Next time you’re craving for a sandwich, be sure to check out Kenny and Zuke’s.  You will not be disappointed.

Cyan/PDX’s New Family Members!

Come down to the lobby and greet the two newest family members of Cyan/PDX, Maui Jim and Sebastian.

Maui Jim is the newest fish to grace our aquarium.  Maui Jim is a Pygmy Angelfish that was introduced to the Cyan Sea Thursday, August 5 2010.  He is a very playful fish that has brought his personality, as well as a splash or turquoise and pink color to the tank.

In addition to Maui Jim, we have received a new shrimp who will be swimming the Cyan Sea as well.  Meet Sebastian, our Blood Red Fire Shrimp.  At this point Sebastian is still acclimating himself to his new home and is a bit more shy compared to the last shrimp.  But you can still see him on the right hand side, under the arch of rocks.

Happy FRYday!

Fried Food.  Arguably America’s largest food addiction.  Combining awesome crisp and tender textures along with that wonderful oil and salty flavor.  Some people believe that anything is better when deep fried.

Fried food comes in a variety of forms.  Head to your nearest State Fair and you’ll find dizens of fried items, many you never would have thought of before.  Below is my list and comments of favorite fried food items.  Go out, grab a deep frier and fry your little hearts out…literally.

Deep Fried Pretzels:

Pretzel purists look away now.  Deep frying pretzel dough does take away from the standard boil and bake texture of the pretzel but a fried texture is absolutely amazing.  Either make or buy some pretzel dough and fry it until it has the golden brown color.  Dip in cheese or mustard sauce and enjoy!

Deep Fried Avocado:

I’m sure this sounds a little out of the ordinary for most, but deep friend avocado is absolutely amazing.  The crispy outside foils the creamy texture of the avocado perfectly.  Even with the deep fried crust, the avocade is the main event of this delicacy.  Cube up some avocados, season(feel free to add additional items such as onions, sun dried tomatoes etc.), and wrap in a spring roll wrapper.  Fry, and enjoy!

Deep Fried Asparagus:

Deep fried asparagus always brings me back to my youth in Stockton, CA at the Asparagus Festival.  Batter these babies up, fry and serve topped with parmesian cheese and Tabasco.  You will never look at asparagus the same ever again.

Deep Fried Corn on the Corn:

Nothing says summer more than corn on the cob.  So why not fry it?  The sweet vegetable works perfectly with a savory beer batter, then deep fried to give it that perfect crust.  It gives the same effect of butter with a completely different texture.  Make and enjoy of a nice summers evening.

Deep Fried Cheesecake:

You’re already going to enjoy a massive amount of calories, why not add some more?  Freeze this rich dessert and wrap in a tortilla.  Add some toothpicks to ensure the tortilla stays closed.  Then fry it up.  When it comes out, top with your favorite dessert toppings.  I suggest fresh strawberries and chocolate sauce.

Chocolate Covered Strawberries:

Spice up this romantic dessert with a little hot oil and batter.  Add another dimension of deliciousness on top of the strawberries and chocolate by frying them.  Make sure the chocolate covered strawberries are throughly chilled before you drop them in the oil.  You only want to cook the batter and melt the chocolate, not cook the strawberry.  Add some whip cream on top and enjoy!

Eat Local!

With all the crazy food trends out there, it’s really hard to determine which ones are actually healthy for you.  Lo-carb, no-carb, fluid diets, , vegetarian, vegan… You just never know what to trust.

Well I found the perfect one for everyone.  Sure it may not trim inches off of you waist line but it will make all of your meals taste better as well as help the environment.

The new trend? Locavore.

Locavores thrive on a strict diet of foods grown within 100 miles of their location.  This helps cut down on packaging and distribution costs and helps support local agriculture in the area.

The nice thing about being a Locavore is you don’t have to cut out any food you enjoy.  No giving up meat, sweets, alcohol… Just enjoying these items that are made on the local level.

Replace fruits and vegetables shipped from a far at the grocery store with locally grown goods found at the local farmers market or other community supported farms.

Buy as many prepared goods from local vendors who don’t have to ship their finished goods to far away lands.  Check the labels, not for calories, but for where they were made.

Having trouble finding local foods?  Check out this Apple application to help you find local goods on the go.

Don’t cut out what you love, just buy the better prepared version of it.  Go Local!

Truly Green Beer

Living in Portland, OR great beers are a dime a dozen.  With dozens of microbreweries in the city, finding a delicious craft beer isn’t hard to come by.  Now finding an organic craft beer is a bit more difficult.  Many breweries will have one or maybe two organic beers on tap for you to try.  But Hopworks Urban Brewery only serves organic beers in its taps.

Enjoy a variety of 6+ types of organic beers from HUB.  Whether it’s the lighter HUB Lager or the darker Survival Stout, HUB has an organic beer to satisfy everyone’s taste buds.

Organic beer brewing is not the only eco-friendly practice they employ at HUB.  In addition to the all natural ingredients, HUB implements many sustainable practices to make this establishment even more Green.  Some of these practices include: Using heat from the pizza over is collected and used to heat the brewing water, as much as the building material for interior and exterior is created from recycled material, their waste-recycling programs strive for zero waste, among many other features.

Stop by and enjoy the well crafter organic beer HUB has made for you.  HUB is located in South East at 2944 Southeast Powell Boulevard.

20 Greenest Colleges: Did Your Alma Mater Make the List?

It’s no secret that some of the largest environmentalists are college students. So it should be no surprise that college campuses are leading the pack in sustainable practices.

Claire Thompson, a student at Northwestern University ranked the top 20 colleges to determine who was greenest. Some of the factors she considered was the building practices of the physical structures on campus, the sustainable programs that were being practiced at the college, green curriculum and waste disposal.

The University of Colorado ranked highest followed closely by University of Washington. THE Willamette University ranked 17th on this list but it is important to recognize that this list is based on Green practices, not pure awesomeness…

Family Dogs New Life Shelter

Looking for a new addition to your family?  Look no further than the Family Dogs New Life Shelter.

Family Dogs is a no kill shelter that is passionate about finding their dogs the perfect adoption match.  Many owners that live in Cyan/PDX have found the perfect owners through Family Dogs New Life Shelter.

Kobe, Charlie, June among others are all alumni of Family Dogs that are currently living in the building.

If you are looking for that special pet to complete you life, there really is no better way to go than providing a rescue dog with a comfortable home.  These pups are so adorable and full of personality, just one look and you’ll never visit another breeder again.

I have to say, the most dangerous thing about Family Dogs New Life Shelter is their website.  I’m not sure what drew me in most.  The awesome pictures of the puppies, the autobiographies of each dog(ok, maybe not autobiographies but the descriptions are told through the dogs voice), or was it the videos they have of the dogs. These three features keep me coming back to the website each week to see which dogs are looking for a home.

Now I haven’t taken the time to visit Family Dogs New Life Shelter yet(mainly because I know I will end up adopting multiple dogs…) but I have been told the adoption process is second to none.  When you arrive, you are welcome to meet any or all of the dogs.  You can play with them, walk them, whatever you need to do to really become comfortable with your future puppy.

The shelter is more than helpful making sure you have a seamless transition with your newest family member.  If you have any issues with your dog, they are more than happy to help you overcome all obstacles so you and your puppy have the best bond possible.

For more information on this shelter, or to just kill some time looking at some awesome potential pets, I strongly suggest you visit the Family Dogs New Life Shelter Website.
