More small and beautiful spaces being built close to home!

Friday, January 29th, 2010

Vancouver, Canada is expected to formally announce the million-dollar creation of 30 so-called “micro-lofts” on the Downtown East side. This is one of many developments around the world, including the Cyan/PDX, that has drawn inspiration from European and Asian design.

At approximately 270 sq. ft. — about the size of two municipal parking spaces — the market rental units will be the smallest in the city.

Beautiful design in small efficient spaces is the future of downtown living and is available here in PDX at the Cyan.

“Frugal” Portland featured in The New York Times!

Saturday, May 16th, 2009

frugal-portlandNew York Times writer, Matt Gross, wrote a fabulous article after his recent trip to Portand.   The article is a mini-travel guide that highlights plenty of non-touristy,  hip and AFFORDABLE places to eat, shop and stay.  All the while using Portland’s stellar public transportation system!  Here are a few snippets:

“Portland is overflowing with great, affordable restaurants. In dozens of meals, I don’t think I was ever truly disappointed with a single bite, nor did I ever leave hungry, nor did my friends and I ever spend more than $25 a person.”

“A dedication to the things that really matter: hearty food and drink, cultural pursuits both high and low, days in the outdoors and evenings out with friends. It’s the good life, and in Portland it still comes cheap.”

Oregon takes another step towards Net Zero: Greywater

Tuesday, March 17th, 2009

plant-medborder4As of yesterday, March 16th, the Oregon House passed bill 2080.  What’s that mean? After approval from the Senate, Oregon will finally be allowed to install greywater reuse systems for irrigation of lawns and gardens. This allows for lower fresh water use, higher groundwater reserves and helps alleviate the strain on failing septic tanks and treatment plants.
Greywater, also known as sullage, is wastewater generated from our everyday chores such as dishwashing, laundry and bathing. Not to be confused with blackwater (which contains feces and toxic chemicals), greywater comprises 50%-80% of residential wastewater and after using basic filtering principles can be used for irrigation.
The use of greywater is yet another solution to our ecological problems and will no doubt be a standard for smart living in the future to come.

Cyan PDX is sponsoring Ignite Portland

Friday, January 30th, 2009

ignite-portland

On February 19th, Ignite Portland will deliver its fifth show, which will be held at the Bagdad Theatre. If you’re not familiar with Ignite Portland, let us take a moment to share what the buzz is all about.

The Ignite series was started by the O’Reilly media group and has grown into an international phenomena with dozens of cities around the globe organizing local events. The format of the event is 13 speakers who get 5 minutes each and 20 slides to share interesting topics ranging from How to buy a car for under $1,000 to Why Deutschland Loves David Hasselhoff to Cup Noodle: Innovation, Inspiration, and Manga. Organized by a local non-profit known as the Legion of Tech, Ignite has been a sold-out show for each of the previous four events. Well, that’s not entirely accurate. The tickets are free, and are generally gone within hours of their release!

We’re a sponsor for the fifth appearance of this series, which has had a record 80 submissions for the coveted 13 spots. Because the freely available tickets are claimed within hours of the event, leave us a comment below if you’d like us to notify you the second they are available. Make sure you include your email address in the email field below!!
