More small and beautiful spaces being built close to home!

Friday, January 29th, 2010

Vancouver, Canada is expected to formally announce the million-dollar creation of 30 so-called “micro-lofts” on the Downtown East side. This is one of many developments around the world, including the Cyan/PDX, that has drawn inspiration from European and Asian design.

At approximately 270 sq. ft. — about the size of two municipal parking spaces — the market rental units will be the smallest in the city.

Beautiful design in small efficient spaces is the future of downtown living and is available here in PDX at the Cyan.

What will the energy-efficient house of the future look like?

Sunday, May 3rd, 2009

A recent article from The Wall Street Journal states that according to The U.S. Energy Department, “buildings are responsible for 39% of our energy consumption and a similar percentage of greenhouse-gas emissions.”  That’s huge! Now how do we fix it?  The Wall Street Journal asked four architects to design an energy-efficient, environmentally sustainable house without regard to cost, technology, aesthetics or the way we are used to living. In essence, forget the unnecessary luxuries that we’ve been trained to need and take the big step to do right by Mother Earth.

Check out the WSJ article!

Low(er) calorie living

Friday, March 20th, 2009

I’ve been thinking about the concept of buildings that produce more energy than they consume, and dispose of more waste than they generate. If you saw Damin’s presentation you got a clear, concise picture of this idea. It’s pretty captivating.

Like lots of folks in my, um, age group, I’m dealing with the reality that I’m taking in more calories than I’m spending. This has been brought into horrifying relief once I started tracking calories with this iPhone application. It’s pretty scary how much you can rack up on a luxury FourthMeal when the first three were already a bit over the top.

So, I’m gonna check in with the fitness guru at Cyan as soon as he moves in. I’m bringing a bike in for jaunts between Cyan and my east-side office space. And, I’m heading to the Farmer’s Market for some produce each Saturday. Going to read The Minimalist’s new cookbook and try to get less protein and carb focused. The goal is to expend more calories than I take in. Kind of a personal take on the Living Building. Wish me luck!
